Position Summary
Under the dual direction of the Manager, TMCE (Exam Quality and Analytics) and the Associate Director, Research Unit, you will provide strategic advice to support and inform the direction of exam development and quality improvement as well as assessment practices and strategies. In addition to developing assessment tools that support the mission of the Royal College, you will conduct research related to Royal College examination and assessment activities. You will spend approximately 80% of your time in service to improving the quality of Royal College exams, such as providing advice to committees or subcommittees on issues related to educational measurement, and 20% of your time conducting applicable research/scholarship that advances the mission of the Exam Quality and Analytics Unit and that of the Royal College more broadly.

Contributing to the development and conceptualization of Royal College exams based on an understanding of each medical specialty, you will use psychometric measurement principles and quantitative analysis to ensure the continuous quality improvement of measurement and assessment tools. You will recommend operational activities related to the effective and efficient development of Royal College examination and other assessment initiatives.

In addition to assisting in the development of examination/assessment tools based on identified needs, you will produce work grounded in relevant theories and apply methodological approaches to develop and advance research ideas, projects and academic publications within the milieu of examinations and/or assessment practices.

With an ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships, you will collaborate and liaise with fellows, medical educators and organizations involved in medical education to organize and advance effective examination and assessment approaches and methods.

You come to us with:

  • Master’s degree with experience in quantitative assessment/examination approaches. A PhD would be an asset.
  • Minimum of 2 years applied experience, or equivalent, working within the assessment field.
  • Strong understanding of psychometric measurement tools and the use of data for continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated success with publication (as lead/co-author) in a related area of research is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop evaluation tools, policies and initiatives.
  • Knowledge and proven expertise in research methods. Efficiency and skill in assimilating, organizing and outlining information and statistical material.
  • Superior analytical skills, accuracy and attention to details.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills. Able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion and judgement when dealing with confidential data, issues or situations.
  • Advanced computer software skills using MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and experience using databases.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills are required. French oral and written communication skills are an asset.
  • Able to travel to domestic/international meetings once or twice per year.
