Position:  Manager, Interpreter Excellence

Region:  Ottawa

Position Summary:
The Manager, Interpreter Excellence will provide strategic leadership to the interpreter development team. As part of the department leadership team, the Manager, Interpreter Excellence is actively engaged in developing and implementing strategies supporting the development of interpreter skills and professional development initiatives including the Interpreter Internship Program and recruitment, retention and standards activities. Act as an advisor to program staff and leadership team on a broad range of field and stakeholder related initiatives and issues

Major Responsibilities:
Interpreter Excellence Leadership

  • Inspire and lead ASL-English, LSQ-French and Deaf Interpreter (DI) interpreter professional development across Ontario and beyond by recruiting, training and qualifying interpreters to meet CHS standards
  • Champion interpreter excellence throughout CHS and externally, ensuring the quality of CHS interpreters continues to be a sustainable, differentiating competitive advantage.
  • Develop and maintain an interpreting ‘Centre of Excellence’ program and culture at CHS
  • Ensure the Interpreter Internship Program (IIP) curriculum is consistently up-to-date and leverages the latest technology to enhance intern learning
  • Develop annual business plans, strategies and key initiatives that align with CHS’ Startegic Plan
  • Responsible for all aspects of program including the day-to-day management of all functional areas of the portfolio including quality assurance, customer service, management of contractors (trainers, evaluators, consultants), risk assessment and mitigation, finanacial planning and management, etc.
  • Keep informed of and inform the team on current trends in the interpreting field, issues and activities to facilitate policy making and strategy development
  • Leverage industry best practices for innovation and growth and keep abreast of latest developments and trends in field
  • Develop, encourage and promote effective internal and external partnerships to ensure high employee, stakeholder and community engagement to achieve strategic goals
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned

Interpreter Standards
  • Establish strategic and tactical performance measures for the evaluation of interpreters’ skills, knowledge and attitude, monitor results and lead execution
  • Leverage industry best practices and develop strategies to integrate technology based systems and processes for efficiencies, innovation and growth
  • Extract data from multiple sources and prepare dashboards/presentations/reports to communicate progress against key performance indicators and program initiatives
  • Use analytics to build recommendations and deliver insight on the current state and highlight potential gaps and growth areas
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

People Development
  • Work with Human Resources staff to recruit, interview, select, hire, employ and performance manage the appropriate number of employees and independent contractors
  • Inspire the team to provide unparalleled service and be the provider of choice across Canada
  • Coach, mentor and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding, empowering employees to meet the organization's expectations for productivity, quality, and goal accomplishment and by providing career development planning and opportunities
  • Participate in the organizations’ performance review process and undertake personal development planning and activities to ensure relevant skills are maintained and enhanced including acquiring and maintaining the language proficiency requirements for the position

Line of Responsibility:
Reports to Director, Interpreting and Translation Services

  • Relevent post-secondary education such as, but not limited to, graduation from an Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC) recognized Interpreter Education Program
  • Active Membership with AVLIC
  • 3 or more years of management experience preferably within a unionized work environment
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of interpreter skill evaluation practices including knowledge of measurement theories and experience with the design, validity, and reliability of instruments
  • Demonstrated understanding and passion for continued learning; experience developing, planning and implementing a wide range of professional development and learning opportunities
  • Experience with contractor management and community engagement activities
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail, demonstrated ability to work efficiently, accurately and independently as well as part of a team
  • Excellent knowledge of internet/website applications and Microsoft Office suite, experience working with a database.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Travel in Ontario e.g. meetings, retreats, etc.

Salary:  To be discussed

Terms of Employment:  Permanent; Full-time
